I am in the US Army Reserve and I can’t get a straight answer from anyone about what happens to my family when I get activated? I am new to State. Currently in Mexico. thank you sir/ma’am.

Question: Regarding transition. The Army has “transition training”, but the differences between DoD and DoS are somewhat daunting. Does Veterans at State have any initiative to inject the organization into A100 to provide mentorship? It would have been beneficial to know about this group and have someone talk to me very pointedly about things to expect insofar as differences in the culture, and many other aspects. Thanks for this, and Happy Veterans Day!!!

The vacancy announcements that were put out specifically for veterans in 2019 were all IT. Will State be offering those types of hiring authorities or paths to other job classifications? There is a huge misconception regarding veteran skills.
Andrea Cilliers - S/OCR
49:25
Yes! We continue to do outreach early on in people’s careers. As far as transition from military to State, it is a huge transition but we have a great community to welcome newcomers and acclimate them to State culture

No, I am not asking about more jobs in the IT field sorry

A couple of years ago, GTM removed veteran’s preference for LE Staff positions overseas (except for EFMs). I’m not sure why the preference isn’t in place overseas but is it the plan to keep that preference removed from LE positions?
Mike Shoemaker - VETS

Sorry if I misread. Hope the answer was helpful

What is the common myth-buster you veterans have experienced at the Department of State? And what do you want us to know regarding that myth-buster?
Kip Hurwitz - S/OCR
01:02:17
I would say that question could be open to anyone too!

Can we get advice as veterans to transition from Civil Service to Foreign Service

Will the Mustang Program be continuing? Is the conversion at GS13 to FSO via hard to fill positions still happening during covid?

There is a myth that a person needs an IT-related degree or must have held an IT MOS or NEC in order to become an IT Specialist. I've worked with veterans and non-veterans alike, across the spectrum of education and background. The IT field is broad and there is a lot of room for veterans.
